The participants in the G6PD Workshop with Taiwanese International experts Dr. Kwang-Jen Hsiao, Laura Fan, and Joy Chiang

The Department of Health (DOH) and the Newborn Screening Reference Center (NSRC) conducted the 2nd Workshop on Enhancing the QA Program for G6PD Confirmatory Test on October 3 at Hotel Kimberly Manila.

 

The first workshop was conducted in July 2010, almost a year after the G6PD Confirmatory Laboratories were established in different parts of the country.

 

The workshop aimed at providing pathologists, chief medical technologists and analysts of the G6PD Confirmatory Centers with strategies to improve the laboratories’ efficiency. The activity served as a walk-through of laboratory processes, with hands-on training to facilitate discussion on the developed guidelines and protocols for the confirmatory centers. Moreover, the workshop was a venue for exchanging best practices and experiences on running the G6PD test.

 

The main resource speaker was Dr. Kwang-Jen Hsiao, Chief Executive Officer of the Preventive Medicine Foundation in Taipei, Taiwan. He was assisted by Joy Chiang and Laura Fan. Dr Hsiao runs the International Quality Assurance Program for G6PD Confirmatory Test.

 

After the workshop and as part of Quality Assurance activity, DOH, NSRC representatives and international experts visited two G6PD confirmatory centers to review the overall flow of G6PD tests in their facility.

Torre Sr. Memorial Hospital (CHD 7), Tagum Doctors Hospital (CHD 11) and Polymedic Medical Plaza (CHD 10).
